Randomness is inherently imprecise

چکیده
We use the martingale-theoretic approach of game-theoretic probability to incorporate imprecision into study randomness. In particular, we define several notions randomness associated with interval, rather than precise, forecasting systems, and their properties. The richer mathematical structure that thus arises lets us, amongst other things, better understand place existing results for precise limit. When focus on constant interval forecasts, find every sequence binary outcomes has an filter intervals it is random for. It may happen none these precise—a single real number—which justifies title this paper. illustrate by showing non-stationary systems can be captured a forecast, which must then less precise: gain in model simplicity paid loss precision. But imprecise can't always explained away as result oversimplification: show there are sequences but never any computable (more) system. also set non-vacuous system meagre, systems.

متن کاملJuxtacrine signaling is inherently noisy.
Juxtacrine signaling is an important class of signaling systems that plays a crucial role in various developmental processes ranging from coordination of differentiation between neighboring cells to guiding axon growth during neurogenesis. Such signaling systems rely on the interaction between receptors on one cell and trans-membrane ligands on the membrane of a neighboring cell. Like other sig...
متن کاملTerminological Reasoning is Inherently Intractable
Computational tractability has been a major concern in the area of termi-nological knowledge representation and reasoning. However, all analyses of the computational complexity of terminological reasoning are based on the hidden assumption that subsumption in terminologies reduces to subsumption of concept descriptions without a signiicant increase in computational complexity. In this paper it ...
متن کاملImprecise singing is widespread.
There has been a recent surge of research on the topic of poor-pitch singing. However, this research has not addressed an important distinction in measurement: that between accuracy and precision. With respect to singing, accuracy refers to the average difference between sung and target pitches. Precision, by contrast, refers to the consistency of repeated attempts to produce a pitch. A group o...
متن کاملMathematics Is Imprecise
We commonly think of mathematics as bringing precision to application domains, but its relationship with computer science is more complex. This experience report on the use of Racket and Haskell to teach a required first university CS course to students with very good mathematical skills focusses on the ways that programming forces one to get the details right, with consequent benefits in the m...
